The following issues are important to consider when starting an international student program:
Academic and Language Differences
- Style of teaching and assessment
- School year differences
- Transcript translation
- Class placement
- Graduation requirements
- Language ability and assessment
There are a variety of tests for evaluating the English language ability of international students.
Here are several:
♦ The Stanford English Language Proficiency (ELP) Test, available through ACSI by contacting Customer Service at 1.800.367.0798. (A new test by CTB/McGraw-Hill called LAS Links will be offered beginning in October 2011.)
♦ The SLEP® test is designed to measure the English language-listening and reading comprehension of students whose native language is not English.
♦ The TOEFL® test measures the ability of nonnative speakers of English to use and understand English as it is spoken, written, and heard in college and university settings.
♦ The TOEFL® ITP is an assessment tool composed of previously administered TOEFL paper-based tests that measures individuals' English proficiency at the intermediate-to-advanced levels.
♦ The TOEIC BridgeTM is designed for beginning and intermediate learners of English who want to have their skills assessed and to identify areas needing improvement.
