Welcome to ACSI’s CIS/Baltic Office

Welcome to the CIS/Baltics Regional Office of ACSI. Our staff workers in Kiev, Ukraine currently serve Christian schools and/or Christian teachers in eleven of the fifteen countries located in the territory of the former Soviet Union.

In 1992 when ACSI first began to work in this vast region spanning eleven time zones, there were no known private Christian schools. During the past twelve years, the Lord has given many believers a vision for Christian school education and ACSI has helped many to act on and expand this vision.

There are approximately 80 Christian schools of various sizes and denominational affiliations in the countries of Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Kyrgyzia. (Forty-three of these are current members of ACSI.)  Although this is a small number and many of the schools are still fragile, their very existence is nothing less than miraculous when seen in the light of prevailing political and economic conditions, bureaucratic difficulties and frequent lack of adequately trained Christian teachers to staff them.

Our regional office has been assisting Christian schools as well as Christian teachers of both private and public schools in the CIS and Baltic countries in their task of developing approaches to teaching and learning that are biblically informed, educationally sound, and culturally appropriate. We emphasize the need to apply a Christian worldview to the goals, content and methods of teaching and learning, the teacher’s view of the learner, and the roles and responsibilities of teachers, parents and school leaders.

The ACSI–CIS/Baltics office encourages, facilitates and supports the exchange of information, cooperation and fellowship among Christian educators from various countries of the CIS, Baltic region, N. America, and W. Europe. Our activities thus far have included: annual conferences for administrators and teachers of both Christian and public schools, summer courses in continuing education for teachers of Christian schools, seminars on specific school subjects, and the publication of books and materials for the professional and spiritual development of Christian teachers.

Materials that we have translated into Russian thus far include:

  • 99 Ideas for Classroom Discipline (Berry): also in Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian
  • The Pattern of God’s Truth (Gaebelein): a call to integrate faith and learning
  • Walking with God in the Classroom (Van Brummelen): college level teacher training textbook
  • Understanding the Times (Noebel): comparative worldviews study
  • Encyclopedia of Biblical Truths for School Subjects (Haycock)
