Preventing Sexual Harassment and Sexual Abuse in Your Ministry

Telios Law has compiled a list of resources which they have collected on sexual harassment in the wake of #metoo. Hopefully these tips will be helpful to your ministry. To get the list go to: https://s3.amazonaws.com/bbemail/PROD/ulib/wjk9o1/docs/ce5c94f2-1d66-45d5-0dab-e65acbe86714/20180321HandoutforMeTooCLS_ECFAWebinar.pdf.

It can also be found in the resource section, under topic 4 student issues, of the ACSI Legal Resources webpage. acsi.org/legal-resources

Physically, Psychologically and Emotionally Safe Schools

The TREP Project (Trauma Responsive Educational Practices Priject) has a number of resources for schools to look at the relative safety of the school's culture as well as how to identify and help students coming to your classrooms with traumatic experiences. One of their latest reports is "Creating Schools That Are Physically, Psychologically and Emotionally Safe." You can find out more about their work at www.trepeducator.org.

The Trauma Informed Teacher

We highly recommend this short article from an educator, nurse and mother of a trauma impacted child be something you circulate to your staff. Research indicates 25-50% of students will be exposed to some form of traumatic event in their childhood and those students are in your classrooms. Help expose your teachers to this reality and give them some tools to reach those students. http://www.ransomforisrael.com/the-trauma-informed-teacher-silent-front-line/

Active Shooter Insurance

Since the latest school mass shooting incident in Florida public school districts are buying active shooter policies at a growing rate, according to an article in the August 2 Wall Street Journal.  While such coverage might be of interest to some, Christian schools should consider other areas before they sign up for coverage.  Basic security planning and facility controls should come first.  Schools should have discussions with their current general liability carrier to see what existing policies already cover and do not. Likely more effort and time could be spent on prevention and identification of those in your community in need.  Active shooter insurance might make sense for some but for most you likely may have better use of those dollars.
