CA/HI Solo/Ensemble Instrumental Festival
Students perform in either a solo and/or ensemble category (duets, trios, quartets, or ensembles up to 10 students). Ensembles are distinguished from bands or orchestras in that the ensembles have only one person per part. Music must be classical or sacred.
Divisions include: Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, Ensembles
Anyone student that the teacher feels could benefit from such an event may participate. The teacher should determine which category (see below) the student will participate in.
- Beginning — Student began playing within the last 6 months. Performance time limited to a maximum period of two minutes.
- Elementary — Student is playing Book 1-2 using simple eighth note patterns, slurs, dynamics, limited use of accidentals, within a limited range. Performance time limited to a maximum period of two minutes.
- Intermediate — More apt to be a Junior High student or a very advanced Elementary student who is playing approximately Book 3 of the band methods. Performance time is limited to a maximum period of 4 minutes.
- Advanced — The exceptional student, more likely to be in High School. Music should be High School or adult concert literature. Performance time limited to a maximum period of six minutes.
The festival takes place as a one-day event (approximately 3–4 hours). Each student receives a certificate of participation. An olympic-style medallion with rating may be purchased.
School Fee: $65 by October 31 ($85 thereafter)
Student Participation Fee: Solo $28, Ensemble $38. Must be submitted by the deadline established by the chairperson (Solo $33, Duet $43 thereafter)
