An Eye For Color

D’Ette Dretke-Faber, merchandise coordinator for Macy’s, uses her background as a personal shopper to increase the professional edge of people in a variety of professions.

It’s amazing how much our appearance communicates. Scripture reminds us that our inner self is the most important, but it is also true that people look at the outward appearance and make judgments about our competence. Do you want to know what your makeup really communicates? Ask a friend to photograph you with a flash camera (either digital or print) in a dimly lit area or in a space with the lights out. Your face will catch the light, and you’ll see your makeup as others see it. Makeup can help us look our best, but it can also detract from a professional appearance. Over the years I’ve given my sister, an early educator, some tips you might find useful:

  • Highlight your eyes by choosing mascara that is both waterproof and nonclumping. (Lancôme’s Definicils is an excellent choice.) Choose eye shadow that is natural and smooth. The look this season is nakedly enhanced.
  • Include eye-liner as part of your makeup routine. It further defines your eyes, and your eyes are the window to your winning personality.
  • Refuse to use gooey lip gloss, which will attract glitter from the art center and capture your windblown hair when you’re on the playground. Instead, keep a tube of lightly colored, shiny ChapStick in your pocket. (Bath & Body Works has some great choices.)
  • Touch up your hair and makeup in late afternoon before parents pick up their children. You’ll instantly feel more confident.
  • Schedule a free consultation at a makeup counter. After explaining your job responsibilities, ask for recommendations of products that will last throughout your day. Clinique, Origins, Lancôme, and Merle Norman are always prepared to answer questions and schedule a consultation, and Mary Kay consultants are happy to schedule a facial and/or makeover in your home.

The perception of any profession is strengthened when those engaged in the field increase their professional edge.
