Teaching With Purpose: Equipping Educators Across Africa

Every classroom holds the potential to shape a life, and every teacher has the opportunity to influence a generation. ACSI is passionate about equipping educators across Africa to see their classrooms not simply as places to impart knowledge, but as opportunities to provide students with a strong foundation of faith and a clear biblical worldview for generations to come.
In keeping with this mission, ACSI developed the Teacher Certification Program (TCP), which upholds excellence by assisting educators in meeting professional and biblical requirements. This program is now being implemented across Africa.
Esther is the Project Director of ACSI member Royal Heirs International School (RHIS) in Lagos, Nigeria, a home to 1,100 students. The TCP program offered her a renewed understanding of what it means to teach: “The Teacher Certification Program reminded me that teaching is more than helping students pass exams,” she said. “It’s about shaping lives for Christ… it’s more than a profession for me. It’s a calling.”
Since applying the training, Esther has seen her school become “more intentional about biblical integration, mentoring teachers, and building a stronger, Christ-centered school culture.” This is the heart ACSI desires to cultivate in those who are educating and inspiring the next generation of African leaders; we are already seeing that vision take root in schools and classrooms.
RHIS is just one of many schools ACSI is partnering with, as the certification program is made available in Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Chad in collaboration with Christian universities and the National Associations of Christian Schools (NACS) in Africa.
Through these partnerships, TCP can maintain consistent certification standards while being delivered in ways that serve the needs of local instructors and communities. Across these nations, approximately 300 educators have already completed the program and received ACSI certification, and we continue to advance toward our goal of seeing 1 million teachers trained by 2050.
To accommodate various community needs, TCP is offered as a blended and flexible program that participants can usually complete within three to six months through a combination of online and in-person instruction. Because accountability and consistency are priorities to TCP, participants actively engage in required courses and learning activities, successfully complete assignments and assessments, and participate in mentoring and classroom reflection throughout the program. Teachers will progress through the materials as a cohort so they can process new information and techniques while sharpening one another in their faith along the way.
Margaret, the principal of ACSI-accredited Dansol High School (DHS) in Nigeria (800 students), noted that her certification classes were led by “seasoned servants of God who have good pedagogical knowledge,” and classes such as Philosophy of Education from the Biblical Worldview taught her how to more effectively integrate the Scriptures and biblical values into her everyday school lessons, “…since God is the source and center of all things.” She described how the program made her more intentional about “raising disciples for Christ,” in addition to instructing them in their educational materials.
Margaret’s own journey into teaching was not straightforward. She began teaching at a young age but said she struggled with the profession for years, even praying and doing what she could to leave teaching. Yet, as she reflects on her journey, she recognizes that “deep down in my heart I knew that was my place.”
Over time, she came to embrace teaching not simply as a profession, but as an opportunity to influence students for Christ. Now, she describes “this peace that floods my heart” whenever she facilitates a class. “I feel fulfilled seeing students thrive under my watch,” Margaret explained. “I’m glad I responded to the call… no one really knows the extent of [one’s] influence.”
Together, these schools offer a glimpse of the potential impact when educators are equipped to embrace their calling and teach from a biblical worldview. That is why ACSI’s vision to see one million teachers trained by 2050 is about more than certification. It is about strengthening schools and equipping educators to influence students for Christ, with an impact that can extend through generations.
Teacher Certification Program in Africa
