When Leaders Change, Schools Change

 

In many parts of the world, improving schools feels like an overwhelming challenge. In sub-Saharan Africa, the pressure is especially intense. Classrooms are crowded. Resources are limited. Teachers are stretched. And yet, amid these obstacles, some schools are beginning to flourish—not because of new buildings or funding, but because of leadership. One of the most encouraging developments in recent years has been the emergence of leadership programs that focus not just on skills, but on transformation. The Paths to School Improvement (PSI) program is helping school leaders rethink how they lead, and the results are reshaping school communities. Traditionally, school leadership has often been about managing systems: schedules, budgets, discipline, and academic performance. These are important, but they are not enough to create lasting change. The PSI approach starts from a different place. It asks a deeper question: What kind of leader does a school need in order to thrive?
