By Dr. Larry Taylor

In many parts of the world, this season brings the excitement of a new school year: new schedules, new students, new goals, and perhaps even a fresh coat of paint! Yet before the first bell rings, we must remember that the strength of a school community is determined not only by how well it prepares, but also by how deeply it depends on God’s Word and prayer.

Psalm 127:1 reminds us, “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.” Our work cannot rest ultimately on our experience, strategies or abilities. It must rest on God.

Teachers shape minds, nurture hearts and point students toward Jesus Christ. Leaders care for families, strengthen faculty, navigate challenges and make decisions that may influence generations. The calling God has given you as a Christian educator is far too great to accomplish through human strength alone.

Jesus said in John 15:5, “Apart from me you can do nothing.” We must remain connected to Christ, the true vine, because every lasting work of spiritual significance flows from him.

Throughout Scripture, God’s people prayed before moving forward. Before Nehemiah rebuilt Jerusalem’s walls, he wept, fasted and prayed. Before the early church spoke with boldness, believers gathered to seek God together.

Acts 4:31 says, “After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.”

Prayer is not simply preparation for the work. Prayer is the strength for the work ahead.

As the school year begins, I encourage you to establish simple rhythms based on Colossians 4:2: “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”

Here are simple times to weave prayer into your day:

  • Begin each morning with God before opening email or entering meetings.
  • Pause before significant decisions.
  • Pray sincerely before gatherings.
  • Intercede daily for a student, colleague, family, school or nation.
  • End each day with gratitude.

May ACSI member schools be known as communities strengthened by God’s Word, sustained through prayer, and fully dependent on Him each day.
