As champions of learning, teachers should be eager students themselves, viewing learning as a lifelong endeavor. Teachers who strive to be lifelong learners benefit not only themselves but also the students they serve. A teacher with this mindset can be a role model for students, engaging them in the learning process and potentially leading students to greater academic success. In the ever-changing educational landscape, professional development helps teachers stay up to date with the latest methodologies, technologies, and educational trends. Professional development (PD) can also help teachers refine their teaching skills and tailor their instruction to diverse learning styles. The following are important components to consider when choosing professional development opportunities:

  • Content Focused: PD should be focused on the specific academic subject matter taught by teachers, or new methodology to be adopted by teachers.

  • Active Learning: PD should engage teachers and not just provide a presentation or information for teachers to passively listen to.

  • Collective Participation: PD should encourage greater collaboration by grouping teachers together in work groups for learning, research, or planning.

  • Coherence: PD should be aligned with the school’s goals and initiatives.

  • Direct Delivery: PD should meet the specific needs of the school through workshops, seminars, or conferences held within your school or outside of your school.
